Cardinal Tetra Care Guide

  • Scientific name: Paracheirodon axelrodi
  • Tank size: 10 gallons minimum for a school of 6+
  • Water parameters: pH 4.5–7.0, temperature 74–82°F, soft to moderately hard water
  • Diet: Omnivore — high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms
  • Lifespan: 4–5 years with proper care
  • Temperament: Peaceful, schooling fish — never keep fewer than 6
  • Tank mates: Other peaceful community fish such as neon tetras, corydoras, dwarf gouramis, and small rasboras. Avoid large or aggressive species.
  • Cardinal tetra vs. neon tetra: Cardinals have a red stripe running the full length of the body, while neons only show red on the back half — cardinals also tend to be slightly larger and more vibrant.

Note:

  • Color and pattern may vary slightly from photos due to natural variation and lighting.
  • Fish may appear less vibrant during shipping and regain color after acclimation.
  • Price is for one individual fish
